ablation [glaciol]

(a) All processes by which snow and ice are lost from a glacier, from floating ice, or from a snow cover. These processes include melting, evaporation (sublimation), wind erosion, and calving. Sometimes ablation is restricted to surface phenomena, thus excluding calving. Cf: accumulation. (b) The amount of snow or ice removed by the process of ablation. Syn: wastage [glaciol].
